The mission of University Schools is to provide the children of our community with educational experiences that enhance their development from birth to graduation and promote dynamic research, collaborative partnerships, and innovative practices. In partnership with our families and community, our purpose is to educate and engage our students by celebrating their individuality, cultivating their strengths, and preparing them for the opportunities of tomorrow.
University Schools are public schools that serve children from birth to graduation through three early childhood education programs and partnerships, a blue ribbon elementary school, a project-based learning middle school, and a new college preparation themed high school. The University is authorized by the state of Tennessee to operate these schools as public laboratory training schools designed to not only provide high quality, innovative education to local children but also as sources of preparation and practice for research and teacher/practitioner training.
University Schools have existed at the University of Memphis since its original founding over 110 years ago. In recent years, enrollment has increased by over 60% and our student body now reflects every local zip-code in Shelby County and spans a cradle to career educational compendium. Our schools are some of the most academically successful public schools in our state, with the second highest success rate for all Tennessee Public Schools, and schools that are designated as experts in STEM and Trauma Informed instruction. But more importantly, they provide inclusive and supportive communities in which all students can thrive.
